Which nerve innervates the diaphragm, and from which spinal roots does it arise?
The phrenic nerve, arising from spinal roots C3, C4 and C5 — remembered as "C3, 4, 5 keep the diaphragm alive". The clinical significance is that a cervical spinal cord injury above C3 abolishes spontaneous breathing, whereas an injury below C5 spares the diaphragm.
Trace a red blood cell from the right atrium to the aorta, naming each valve and vessel.
Right atrium → tricuspid valve → right ventricle → pulmonary valve → pulmonary trunk and arteries → pulmonary capillaries (gas exchange) → pulmonary veins → left atrium → mitral (bicuspid) valve → left ventricle → aortic valve → aorta. Note the pulmonary arteries carry deoxygenated blood and the pulmonary veins carry oxygenated blood — the one place the usual artery/vein rule inverts.
