What is the difference between a phoneme and an allophone?
A phoneme is a contrastive sound unit — swapping it changes meaning, as /p/ and /b/ do in "pin" versus "bin". Allophones are predictable variants of a single phoneme that never contrast: aspirated [pʰ] in "pin" and unaspirated [p] in "spin" are the same phoneme /p/, because their distribution is determined by context and no English word pair is distinguished by that difference.
Why is "The old man the boats" difficult to parse on first reading?
It is a garden-path sentence. Your parser commits early to "the old man" as a noun phrase, then hits "the boats" with no verb available. The correct reading takes "the old" as a nominalised adjective functioning as the subject, and "man" as the verb meaning to staff. It demonstrates that parsing is incremental and revision is costly.

Yes — IPA characters are handled as normal text throughout, so transcription cards work. Reading them back is one thing and producing them under time pressure is another, so pair the cards with handwritten transcription practice.
It will drill the rules and constituency tests that determine what the tree should look like, and explain why a particular structure is required. Drawing the tree itself is a pen-and-paper skill — but most students who struggle with trees are actually struggling with the tests, which is the part it fixes.
