Short answer: a cram sheet works when it's a set of retrieval cues, not a summary. One page, your own words, organised by how the exam asks questions rather than how the lecturer ordered the slides. You can build one by hand in about 40 minutes with the method below, or use a cram sheet generator to draft it from your notes and then edit it — the editing is where the learning happens.
It's the night before. You have eleven weeks of lectures and about four hours. Somewhere in the panic you decide to make a cram sheet, and two hours later you've produced a beautifully formatted document that is, functionally, your notes in a smaller font.
You will not remember it. Here's why, and what to do instead.
Why most cram sheets fail
The failure is almost always the same: you copied instead of compressed.
When you copy a definition onto a summary page, your eyes pass over it and your brain files it as "seen." No effort, no encoding. You've done transcription, which feels like studying because it takes time and produces an artefact, but it's the same trap as highlighting — the difference between recall and re-reading is exactly the difference between a cram sheet that works and one that doesn't.
Three specific mistakes:
- It's a summary, not a cue sheet. A summary tells you the answer. A cue prompts you to produce the answer. Only the second one rehearses what the exam demands.
- It follows lecture order. Your exam doesn't ask questions in slide order. It asks by topic, by comparison, by "which of these applies when…"
- It's too long. If it doesn't fit on one page, you haven't made the decisions that make it useful. The compression is the studying.
The method: build a cue sheet in 40 minutes
Step 1 — Predict the questions first (10 min)
Before touching your notes, write down every question you think could be on the exam. Use past papers, the learning objectives, and anything the lecturer said twice.
Do this first, from memory. It's uncomfortable, and that discomfort is the point — you're finding the gaps while you still have time to fix them.
Step 2 — Answer from memory, in your own words (15 min)
Go through your predicted questions and write the shortest answer you can, without looking. Where you get stuck, mark it and move on. Don't open the slides yet.
You now have two piles: things you know, and things you don't. Most people discover the second pile is smaller than the dread suggested — and it's the only pile worth your remaining hours.
Step 3 — Fill only the gaps (10 min)
Now open your notes, and only for the marked items. Write each answer in your own words. If you catch yourself copying a phrase verbatim, stop and rephrase it — if you can't rephrase it, you don't understand it yet, and that's worth knowing at 9pm rather than 9am.
Step 4 — Compress to cues (5 min)
Rewrite the whole thing as prompts, not answers:
❌ "Krebs cycle: takes place in mitochondrial matrix, inputs acetyl-CoA + oxaloacetate, produces 3 NADH, 1 FADH₂, 1 GTP per turn"
✅ "Krebs → where? in/out? yield per turn?"
The second version forces retrieval every time you glance at it. The first just shows you the answer. In the morning, you can read down the cue sheet and self-test the entire unit in four minutes.
What to include (and what to cut)
Include:
- Anything with a formula, threshold or number you'd lose marks for misremembering
- Comparisons and distinctions — "X vs Y" questions are exam favourites
- Sequences and processes where order matters
- The three things you got wrong most often in practice questions
Cut:
- Anything you've answered correctly three times running
- Background and context that won't be assessed
- Definitions you could reconstruct from first principles
- Anything you copied without thinking about
That last one is worth a second read. If a line is on your sheet because it was in the notes rather than because you decided it belonged, cut it.
Using a cram sheet generator (without wasting the benefit)
The obvious objection to everything above: it takes 40 minutes you may not have.

The night-before sequence
If you have four hours, here's the order that actually works:
- Build the cue sheet (40 min, or 15 with a generator plus editing).
- Self-test against it — cover the cues, answer aloud, mark failures. (30 min)
- Do practice questions on your weakest three topics. (90 min)
- Re-test the cue sheet. Only the items you failed. (20 min)
- Sleep. Yes, actually.
Notice that building the sheet is step one of five, not the whole plan. The sheet isn't the studying — it's the instrument you study with. The most common night-before mistake is spending all four hours on step one and calling it a night.
And a word on step five: sleep is when memory consolidates. Trading your last three hours of sleep for three more hours of re-reading is, on the evidence, a bad deal.
